I Took Spirit’s Second Chance

I didn’t know that the beautiful, little pixie of a young girl who walked into the basement of the church on that cold November evening across from Central Park East to audition for “Dames at Sea” would eventually become my wife and life partner. She walked right up to me because the sign up sheet for the auditions was on the coffee table right next to me. She looked at me and simply said, “Haven’t I met you before?” I was so taken by her attractive aura that I really didn’t know what to say so I said, “I don’t think so.” That was the end of the conversation and I continued to look at her and she continued to look at me during the entirety of the auditions. I wanted so much to say something to her but she left at the end of the auditions without a single, further word from me. It was a big let down. I walked home, across Central Park in the freezing snow, back to the West side to my apartment knowing that I had squandered a chance to meet and get to know this beautiful young woman.

Fast forward two weeks when, for some reason, I decided to walk in the freezing cold of a New York December to a supermarket fairly far from my apartment for a few assorted items I needed. Why I chose this supermarket, I don’t know. I was just led there. As I was checking out, who should appear, walking up to the check out line I was in but the beautiful young lady I had met at the audition at the church basement. I immediately turned to her and engaged her in conversation, eventually getting up the nerve to ask her out. From that moment in the grocery store, we were never apart save during times when we each had acting jobs outside of New York. Within three months we were living together and within several years we were married and had a child. We were together for 36 years until her untimely death on her birthday in 2012 at the age of 59.

I tell you this story because I believe that providence or what I like to call Spirit intervened to give me a second chance with Maureen. I had ignored the first knock of Spirit when Maureen first appeared at the church but Spirit gave me a second chance in that supermarket and I unconsciously realized that this was more than just coincidence, this was true synchronicity. I was meant to meet Maureen. It was my destiny to meet her and the promise that I made to her before we both came into bodies this time around, was kept. I became her soulmate and so much more. We worked together, lived together, raised a child together and completed our individual soul missions on Earth together.

This is all to say that there is a level of reality where the ego is not in charge. It is the soul calling the shots and the soul is the dominant player in the sandbox we call Earth. Many are mistaken and believe it’s the persona/psyche/ego that rules our lives but it is not. It is our soul, our Spirit and in this case with my life with Maureen, I listened when Spirit gave me a second chance at fulfilling my soul’s path in this lifetime. There is much more to the story that is too long to tell about how my soul guided me to even be on the Upper West Side of Manhattan where Maureen was also living when I met her. Suffice it to say that a part of me listened to Spirit’s promptings that guided me to the right place at the right time to fulfill my destiny.

I believe that it is very important to listen to your soul’s promptings, to listen to Spirit as it is there to guide you to your purpose in your life. I believe that opening yourself up to the voice of your soul, your Spirit is the most critical act you can accomplish in a lifetime.
